Free Google applications for RP schools
By Paul Darwin Garilao
The No.1 internet search provider is touring the Asia-Pacific region to promote innovative products and technologies that may be useful for schools.
In cooperation with De La Salle Philippines (DLSP) and Philippine Society of IT Educators, Google Inc. launched a talk for educators who came from different schools nationwide held at the DLSP Multi-Purpose Hall, 20th Floor Br. Andrew Building last Dec. 6.
Though most people associate Google with search engines, the company has been developing technologies and social networks that will be beneficial to any organization. Jeff Keltner, a global manager from Google, promoted the company's innovative products, particularly the Google Apps Education Edition.
Speaking to at least 70 educators, Keltner said the application makes the students, faculty, alumni, and staff share information and ideas more easily.
Through Google Apps, the school community can "search their mails, collaborate over IM with their contacts, and add classes and meetings to their calendars right from Gmail interface." Everything is now compacted in one application.
Keltner cited that Arizona State University (ASU) was able to maximize the application, when the school administration availed of it. The ASU chief information officer told Keltner that the school was able to save $500,000 because of Google Apps.
As a year-old product, the Google Apps is offered free to schools.
