Pasig kids engage in garbage recycling

Talayan

While learning the value of earning, the school children of Pasig City are engaged in proper segregation of garbage or recycling program.

Dubbed as Green Hearts Savers, City Environment and Natural Resources (CENRO) chief Raquel Naciongayo said the program aims to address the solid waste concerns of the city in an ecological manner by initiating activities for the reduction and recycling of city waste.

"The program wants to educate schoolchildren, giving the students or schoolchildren the green light for them to start properly on how to manage their garbage in schools and homes," said Naciongayo.

The schoolchildren will function as "green savers" that will give them the opportunity to take part in maintaining the cleanliness, both inside and outside, of their schools.

Students who actively participate in conserving the environment through bringing in to their schools household recyclable wastes, will receive its appropriate cash value.

"It is an effective tool of teaching the children and the community as a whole on how to help alleviate the aggravating problem of improper waste management," said the CENRO chief.

Students are encouraged to bring papers, bottles, boxes, and other recyclable items such as Styrofoam, tetra-packs, plastic, cellophane in exchange for cash.

Under the scheme, the children will be able to receive money for recyclables that they surrendered, which were recorded in their "passbook."

"Students shall register as Green Heart Savers and when they bring recyclable materials, and according to their value, they shall receive money but a conforme will also be given to students so their parents would know," Naciongayo said.

The public schools, on their part, will establish within the school an appropriate and accessible space or physical facility for the collected waste materials that can be eligible for deposit or redeemable with cash value.
