The 15-year- old is being recognized for essaying “daring roles that have expanded the range of contemporary Philippine cinema.” Malvar’s role in the film, “Hamog (Haze),” is that of Jinky, a violent street kid who is taken to work as a house maid in a twisted household.

The award is meant to bring the world’s attention to Asia’s most exciting new talents.

Malvar’s role in the same film also earned for her the Best Actress trophy at the 2015 Cinema 1 Originals where “Hamog” was an officially entry by writer-director Ralston G. Jover.

Malvar has previously won three other acting awards since she started in films at the age of 12.

The 2016 NYAFF is also set to honor actor John Lloyd Cruz as an Asian Star in the same festival.
