What Do You Do When People Are Saying Hurtful Things About You?

Were you insulted?

Were sarcastic remarks hurled your way?

Were you hurt because of the words said about you?

Words are powerful; it can bring life, it can kill. Each and every word that comes out of our mouths should be well thought of, simply because it cannot be taken back once it has been said.

Words are powerful.

But what if we are on the receiving end of hurtful words?

How should we react?

What do we do?

Do we retaliate or should we let it go?

There are two things that you can choose to do when someone speaks negative things about you.

FORGIVE THE PERSON

I know, it is easier said than done. Forgiving is not easy to do, but if you hold back from doing it, you will just be torturing yourself. You have already been hurt because of the words said about you – do you think that not forgiving and being bitter will lighten the load in your heart? The truth is you’re not doing yourself a favor by making yourself a prisoner of unforgiveness. You’re just helping the person who said bad things about you continue to ruin you.

They’ve said you are worthless, useless, irresponsible, gold digger, obese, anorexic, and other things that are offensive. What then? Are you going to just let it affect you in more negative ways? Or will you choose to be positive, doing things that will boost your confidence? Will you choose to be positive, forgiving the person who said those things?

Remember, you have a choice and you can always choose to forgive.

PRAY FOR THE PERSON

Revenge is not the key to freedom from hurt and bitterness, nor is it the means to make you feel better when someone says something bad to you or about you. The key is to pray for the person.

Lift that person to God and let Him embrace that person so he can receive total grace from the Lord.

Revenge is a natural response for when we have been mistreated. But this natural instinct is not pleasing to the God we serve. So we have to do the extraordinary not to please men but to please the God that we serve.

Remember, you have a choice and you can always choose to pray for the person who hurt you.

THINK. REFLECT. REPLY.

If someone has said hurtful things about you, remember that you always have a choice–the path of unforgiveness and revenge or the path of forgiveness and prayer. Choose wisely.
