As the Philippines wraps up the longest Christmas Season in the world that ends on January 6, the Feast of Epiphany, Filipinos look forward to fresh starts and new things in 2020.

2020 Lausanne Winter Youth Olympics, Tokyo Summer Olympics, and Paralympics

The year’s great sporting events where Filipinos will compete begin in January as the Winter Youth Olympic Games is staged in Lausanne, Switzerland from January 9-22, 2020. Skier Ana Noelle Reynado Wahleithner will carry the Philippine flag as the 1st Filipina Qualifier to the 2020 Winter Youth Olympic Games.

These world class athletes are aiming to deliver the elusive gold for the Philippines

The 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics is scheduled to take place in Japan between July 24 and August 9, 2020.

We are excited to see the performance of our national athletes, who are on a hot momentum off the 30th SEA Games gold medal victories and have qualified (others athletes are still in the process of qualifying) for the Tokyo Summer Olympics, including: Pole vaulter Ernest John “Ej” Obiena, the first Filipino who qualified for Tokyo, and crowd-favorite gymnast Carlo Edriel Yulo.

Rio Olympics silver medalist weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz and boxing champions Nesthy Petecio and Eumir Marcial are working on racking up points for their qualification, while the Philippines’ FIBA 3×3 Men’s Basketball Team has nabbed a spot in the Olympic Qualifying Tournament.

The Paralympics will keep the differently-abled athletes’ spirits alive between August 25 and September 6, and we look forward to seeing our para athletes like para swimmer Ernie Gawilan qualify for the international games.

Anti Dengue Drug and More Homegrown Medicines

Tuklas Lunas aims to discover and develop homegrown medicines.

A dengue cure developed by Filipino science researchers may finally be available in the market by 2020. This was announced by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) in mod December of 2019, as part of its “Tuklas Lunas” program’s success stories.

The drug has shown great results against the dengue virus, having a 100% effectivity rate against the dengue virus even on patients with complications. They were also able to prove that the drug has no side effects and safe. However, it will still go through more tests for at least six months to determine its effectiveness. The Department of health (DOH) expressed their hope and optimism for the drug’s potential to help thousands of patients and solve the dengue problem plaguing the country.

The Tuklas Lunas Program aims to develop homegrown medicines from locally available plants. There are already 26 plants that are undergoing formulation and standardization for gout, inflammation, hypertension and blood-glucose lowering by the University of the Philippines – Manila, Ateneo de Manila University, Pascual Lab, Inc., Pharmalytics, Inc. and Herbanext Lab, Inc.. The development of functional food and herbal drug candidates from edible mushrooms and ferns are being conducted by the Central Luzon State University and Central Mindanao University.

Voltes V – Legacy

Voltes V Returns to Philippine television with Filipino voice actors.

Yes! It’s coming back! The Voltes V saga is coming back to Philippine television and is scheduled to air and volt in this year on GMA Network. The animation series that captured the imagination of young hearts and minds of generations was teased as returning to the small screen in a video posted on January 1, 2020, by GMA Network social media.

Voltes V, a Japanese anime series produced by Toei and Nippon Sunrise which was first aired in the Philippines by GMA 7 in 1978 and re-aired with Filipino dubbing in 1999, was teased on the new video as a live action remake of the animated series with Filipino audio dub. The 60-second teaser presented during the channel’s annual new year special, features Camp Big Falcon and the Voltes V robot in 3D animation.

We are excited especially, because industry rumors are circulating that the cast of the show will include Filipino actors Ruru Madrid, Mikee Quintos, and Kyline Alcantara. WATCH the video teaser here.
