The Bohol Wisdom School (BWS) has been shortlisted for the 2022 Zayed Sustainability Prize, the United Arab Emirates’ pioneering global award in sustainability and humanitarianism.
The Philippine educational institution was named among the 30 finalists for the prize in the Global High Schools category announced on September 28, 2021.
The students of Bohol Wisdom School came up with an automated water-quality monitoring system for aquaculture ponds to aid the school’s local community.
“The school hopes to mitigate the loss of fish in the Philippines while learning about water quality, food waste fertilizers, and tech innovation,” BWS said on the awards’ website.
According to the BWS, the project will benefit students and the local community over the next 20 years, impacting 1,000 students in the first five years alone. Outside of the school, the project aims to assist fish farmers in increasing their productivity.
The Zayed Sustainability Prize, an evolution of the Zayed Future Energy Prize, is a tribute to the legacy of the UAE’s founding father, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.
Established by the UAE leadership in 2008, the annual award recognizes and rewards the achievements of those who are driving impactful, innovative and inspiring sustainability solutions across five distinct categories: Health, Food, Energy, Water, and Global High Schools.
The winners of the Zayed Sustainability Prize will be announced in an awards ceremony in January 2022.
