Bohol’s teen weightlifter Vanessa Sarno raised the Philippine flag in North Korea as the 16-year-old bagged 2 gold medals and a silver at the 2019 Asian Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championships.

The Filipino champion weightlifter dominated her 71-kilogram youth women division, finishing with a gold as first rank in the Overall Youth with a score of 209 against other 4 finalists in Asian Weightlifting Federation competitions held from October 19-27 in Pyongyang.

Vanessa Sarno also picked up a convincing gold in the Snatch Event with a score of 91 – way above the second contender from North Korea who scored 85, Uzbekistan with 84, Korea with 83, and Taiwan with 80.

The Filipino youth weightlifting champion emerged with a Silver in the Clean and Jerk event with 118 kg, just a kilogram away from the gold medalist form North Korea who scored 119.

Team Philippines took home another Silver from Chariz Macawli who emerged 2nd Overall in the 40-kg Youth Women’s division after a silver-winning lift of 116 and 66kg in the Clean and Jerk event, and a bronze in Snatch with a score of 50 kg.

Rosegie Ramos picked up a Bronze with her 76kg lift in the Women’s 49 kg. Snatch event.

Giselle Anne Betua won bronze with a score of 92 in the Clean and Jerk event of the 55kg. division.

The Philippines ended the campaign in North Korea at rank 5th overall among the 10 participating nations.

Vanessa Sarno, Chariz Macawli, Rosegie Ramos, and Giselle Anne Betua are the Philippines’ new medal hopes in women’s weightlifting, following the footsteps of Rio Olympics Silver medalist Hidilyn Diaz who also won the country’s first Asian Games gold in 2018.

Diaz also delivered medals for the Philippines when she competed this year at the Asian Weightlifting Championships in China where she earned 3 silvers, and then at the World Weightlifting Championship in Thailand where she picked up 2 bronze medals.

SEND congratulations to Vanessa Sarno and Team Philippines for their podium finishes in North Korea!
