UPDATED. Pinoy Aquaman Ingemar Macarine today set a new open water swim record after making the first successful crossing of Buluan Island.
Macarine, accompanied by 15 open water swimmers from Zamboanga City and Zamboanga Sibugay Province, successfully crossed a part of the Sibugay Bay by swimming nonstop from Buluan Island to Buluan Port in Mainland Ipil spanning 2.7 kilometers of open seas.
The charity swim to call attention to marine conservation and sustainable tourism took 1 hour.
In his Facebook post, Macarine explains they had to change the landing site from the original Serendipity Isle in Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay to Buluan Port and shortened the swim because they were swimming against a strong current.
ONGOING STORY. The “Pinoy Aquaman”, Environmental lawyer-athlete Ingemar Macarine, this morning set off for a new record open water swim in the waters of Zamboanga Sibugay, his first charity swim in 2020 and the 35th open water swim of his career.
Macarine is swimming a distance of 3.5 kilometers from the Buluan Island to Serendipity Isle in Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay. The event marks Macarine’s first open water swim in the Philippines since 2017.
The long-distance swimmer is joined by 15 other local swimmers from Zamboanga Sibugay and Zamboanga City.
The swimming record attempt on February 24, 2020, dubbed “Langoy Para sa Kinaiyahan ug Malungtarong Turismo” (Swim for the Environment and Sustainable Tourism), crosses the open seas to the tourist destination island and calls attention to marine protection and sustainable tourism.
The swim attempt is supported by the Philippine Sports Commission and marks the 22nd anniversary of the creation of Zamboanga Sibugay as a separate province.
Macarine last swam in Philippine waters from Pamilacan Island to Baclayon in Bohol on November 2017. Prior to that he was swimming for various advocacies in the Philippines and around the world.
Ingemar Macarine is referred to as the Pinoy Aquaman” after setting records in open water swimming for his charities.
In 2017, Dumaguete’s Pinoy Aquaman Ingemar Macarine swam some 25 km from Dumaguete to Siquijor.
In 2019, the Ocean 6 group of female open water swimmers also successfully crossed the waters of Dumaguete to call attention to water pollution.
Paralympics swimmer Ernie Gawilan also advocates clean swiimming waters by joining international coastal clean ups.
