Dapugan’s Bonuan Boquig National High School (BBNHS) has won the 2022 World’s Best School Prize for Environmental Action, for helping students take steps beyond the classroom to protect their future.

The Pangasinan public high school’s Longos River mangrove planting project was recognized for restoring lost mangroves to reverse the environmental devastation caused by the 2009 Typhoon Ondoy (International name Parma/Pepeng) to local communities.

The Philippine school bested finalists International School of Zug & Luzern in Switzerland and the Green School of Bali in Indonesia, along with pre-finals competitors from Argentina, Canada, Colombia, Greece, Malawi, Palestine, and the United Arab Emirates.

BBNHS was announced the winner of the education award with a prize of USD 50,000 via a live-streamed ceremony on October 14 which also awarded the best schools for Community Collaboration, Innovation, Overcoming Adversity, and Supporting Healthy Lives. The selection of the five category winners was made after an online advisory public vote that complemented the independent Judging Academy during World Education Week.

The Dagupan secondary education school made it to the World’s Best School Prize finals after it was shortlisted in the top 50 in the inaugural global competition between schools that are transforming the lives of their students and making a real difference in their communities.

The involvement of students since the Ondoy disaster has given the school a reputation for being a leader in the practice of integration of classrooms and the real-life application of a solution that has contributed to the clearing and cleaning of waterways in the area.

“These schools have developed and demonstrated great experience in their respective prize categories, and we are thrilled to share their success stories with the world. We believe their expertise and innovative practices will inspire other schools and teachers, thereby improving the quality of education globally,” the World’s Best School Prizes announcement said.

The World’s Best School Prizes is hosted by T4 Education, a global education organization that aims to recognize the excellence and dedication of schools in the world ‘in transforming the lives of their students.’
