Sorsogon province’s main attractions – Donsol’s Butanding whale sharks, scenic mountainscapes, and the Cross marking the site of the first Holy Mass – are featured in the Philippine Postal Corporation’s (PHLPost) commemorative stamp to mark 125 years of the founding of Sorsogon province.

PHLPost Postmaster General Joel Otarra presented the new stamps to Governor Chiz Escudero during the province’s celebration of their 125th founding Anniversary last October 17.

It was on October 17, 1894, that Sorsogon was officially separated from the province of Albay. Sorsogon City is its Capital.

Featured on the 125th Founding Anniversary stamp are the most famous facets of Sorsogon – the Provincial Capitol Building, the Donsol butanding or whale shark, the scenic mountainscapes of the province, and the Cross marking the site of the first Holy Mass held in Gibalon, Magallanes in 1569. This event is celebrated every October 22 and coincides with the town’s Kasanggayahan (Prosperity) Festival.

Postmaster General Otarra said the stamp allows the next generation to revisit the greatest symbols of the province.

Gov. Escudero said the Commemorative Stamp highlights the province’s pride: the Provincial Capitol Building that symbolizes honest public service, the Butanding that draws tourists to Donsol, the unique Bulusan Volcano and Bulusan Lake, and the Cross which marks the first Holy Mass held in the province 450 years ago.

“The province of Sorsogon‘s rich culture and heritage are valuable assets to the province, and the people of Sorsogon honoring their roots,” went the citation of PHLPost.

PHLPost has printed 40,000 pieces of the stamps which is being sold at Php12 each. Graphic Artist Rodine Teodoro designed the stamps.

Sorsogon marked another milestone during their anniversary as the province officially made a new Guinness World Record for the Largest Filipino Folk Dance.

Sorsogon children have also made the headlines, among them, 12-year-old volunteer teacher Dagul and studious child Justin.

SEND cheers in the comments below to the people of Sorsogon for marking their milestones!
