The stage is set for the electrifying division finals of the 2023 SGM Wesley So Cup, part of the Professional Chess Association of the Philippines’ (PCAP) 3rd conference. The highly-anticipated matches will determine which teams will advance to the Grand Champion title match.
In the Northern Division, defending champions Pasig City King Pirates are up against the formidable San Juan Predators. Both teams hail from Metro Manila and boast an impressive season record of 23 wins and only 2 losses. The Pasig City team, eager to retain their title, secured their spot in the finals after winning over Laguna PECA on December 2. The Predators, on the other hand, earned their chance by overcoming the BNU Cavite Spartans in their semifinal showdown.
The Southern Division finals feature an exciting Visayas derby. The Toledo-Xignex Trojans, with their 22-3 win-loss record, face off against the 2021 Wesley So Cup champions, the Iloilo Kisela Knights. Toledo clinched their finals berth by defeating the Davao Durianburg Stallions, while Iloilo earned their spot after outplaying the Surigao Fianchetto Checkmates.

This tournament, named after Super Grand Master Wesley So, a three-time United States Chess Champion and two-time Grand Chess Tour Champion, highlights his enduring legacy in the chess world. So, who began his chess journey in the Philippines before moving to the United States, continues to inspire and support chess development in his home country.
