H.E.R., whose real name is Gabriella “Gabi” Sarmiento Wilson, joins “In The Heights” star Corey Hawkins in the film.

“The Color Purple” is a feature adaptation of the Broadway musical based on the book of the same name by Alice Walker from 1982. The story follows a woman named Celie Harris and tracks her life-long struggles as an African American woman living in the South during the early 1900s.

The film is produced by Oprah Winfrey under Harpo Films and Steven Spielberg, who adapted Walker’s novel for the screen in 1985. Winfrey and Whoopi Goldberg were in the original cast of the 1985 film. Scott Sanders and Quincy Jones, both of whom were behind the Broadway musical, will also produce.

The Warners Bros movie is slated for release on December 20, 2023.

Wilson won her first Oscar for Best Original Song with “Fight For You” from the Warner Bros film “Judas and the Black Messiah”, a historic win which she dedicated to black and Filipino girls.

The Fil-Am singer-songwriter earlier treated fans to an entertaining video that pays tribute to her maternal Pinoy roots following her 63rd Grammys double wins.
