Filipina staff nurse Charito Leonardo-Romano has been awarded the British Empire Medal in recognition of the nurse’s “outstanding work” amid the COVID-19 pandemic in the United Kingdom.
Romano is among the recipients of the Medal of the Order of the British Empire given at Queen Elizabeth II’s 2021 New Year Honours list.
British ambassador to the Philippines and Palau Daniel Pruce congratulated Romano for her exemplary service to nursing care home residents at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic in the UK.
“Many congratulations to Staff Nurse Charito Romano, from the Philippines, awarded a British Empire Medal in the New Year’s Honours for her outstanding work at Arbrook House Care Home in the UK during the Covid-19 pandemic,” the envoy wrote in a tweet on January 2, 2021.
Romano, originally from Cabanatuan, Nueva Ecija, has been working in Arbrook House Care Home in Esher, England since 2018. In a statement, Romano thanked her manager and fellow healthcare workers whom she dedicated her success.
“I am sharing this award to all my colleagues and to the whole Arbrook team. If not for them, I will not be able to have this award. It is a team-effort,” Charito Romano said.
The staff nurse also shared that she was proud to represent the Philippines in her work and hopes to inspire fellow Filipinos overseas.
“This is the time to show the world what we can be. Whatever you do, you dedicate yourself to it. Always remember that that wherever you are, whatever you do, you will always shine because Filipinos are hard workers,” Romano added.
