Teen golf star Yuka Saso, the first Filipina to win the United States Women’s Open Championship, will soon be featured in a special postage stamp issued by the Philippine Postal Corporation (PHLPost).

The PHLPost announced in a Facebook post on June 9, 2021, that Saso will be honored with a new stamp and postcard to commemorate her historic victory.

“Thank you Yuka Saso for bringing home so much honor to the Philippines as the 1st Filipino to win the US Women’s Open Golf Championship at 19 years old,” Postmaster General Norman “Mr. Postman” Fulgencio said.

The 19-year-old Filipino-Japanese golfer also made history as the youngest champion of the tournament, tying with Inbee Park of South Korea, who achieved the same feat in 2008.

Yuka Saso climbed to 9th rank in the Women’s World Golf rankings after the win, bringing her closer to a Tokyo Olympics berth for the Philippines.

“Your much deserved Post Office Stamp and Postcard are now being prepared. Again, the Post Office is very proud of you!” Fulgencio adds.

The Philippines’ Asian Games champion also won the Japan Ladies Professional Golf Association (JLPGA) tour in 2020, the first Filipina golfer to claim the LPGA title.

Fulgencio earlier announced that for the first time, the Post Office will constantly honor living Filipinos who have brought inspiration, joy, pride, and glory to the Filipino community and have heavily contributed in their chosen field by featuring them in Postage Stamps.

“Very few notable living personalities have been featured in stamps but now we will be more inclusive in giving honor and recognition to Filipinos living and deceased,” Fulgencio said in a statement.

The Post Office will recognize celebrities, writers, designers, athletes, musicians, artists, scientists, and other nationally and internationally known figures of Filipino descent, both living and deceased.

The PHLPost previously featured Filipino modern-day heroes such as COVID-19 frontline workers and teachers in Philippine stamps.
