Filipino basketball fan Harold Mortel has received the “Heroes Among Us” award from the Boston Celtics and the Massachusetts State Lottery for his fund-raising efforts for the Philippines.

The resident of Quincy, Massachusetts, was recognized for raising funds for needy Filipinos by organizing basketball tournaments for a cause.

Mortel was honored at the Celtics game during Filipino American Heritage Night on November 22, 2021 (November 23, Manila time) at the TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts, U.S.A.

“Today’s @MAStateLottery #HeroAmongUs used his love of sports to help those in need,” the Boston Celtics organization shared on Twitter.

“Harold Mortel realized that COVID-19 had hit his home country of the Philippines hard and organized a series of basketball tournaments to raise vital funds for the community,” the organization added.

Mortel’s crowdfunding project intends to help public school students in the Philippines buy school supplies during the pandemic.

The Heroes Among Us program is one of the premier community outreach programs in professional sports. Established as an initiative of the Boston Celtics in 1997, Heroes Among Us honors individuals who have made an overwhelming impact on the lives of others.

The Heroes Among Us Award is presented to an individual or individuals who, through their unique commitment and humanitarian spirit, have made exceptional and lasting contributions to our community.

Overseas Filipino nurse Aldrin Licayan sponsored tablet computers for Pinoy kids who need gadgets to continue schooling while nurse-triathlete Romeo “Oreo” Puncia supported frontline workers and commuters in the Philippines with bicycles.
