Filipino director Erik Matti’s new film, “On The Job: The Missing 8,” will have its worldwide premiere as a competing entry at the 78th Venice International Film Festival in Italy from September 1 to September 11, 2021.

The highly-anticipated “On The Job” sequel, starring John Arcilla, Dennis Trillo, and Dante Rivero, is part of this year’s competition line-up in the feature-length films category announced on July 26.

The Filipino movie is the lone Asian production in the competition and will compete alongside twenty other films such as Maggie Gyllenhaal’s “The Lost Daughter, Lorenzo Vigas’ “La Caja,” and Valentyn Vasyanovych’s “Reflection,” among others.

“On The Job: The Missing 8” is the follow-up to the award-winning 2013 crime thriller “On The Job,” also directed by Erik Matti. Inspired by true events, the sequel follows a radio journalist, Sisoy, portrayed by John Arcilla, in a time of corruption and media censorship in the Philippines.

Arcilla stars in the film alongside Dennis Trillo, Dante Rivero, Christopher de Leon, Lotlot De Leon, Andrea Brillantes, Leo Martinez, Agot Isidro, Eric Fructuoso, Vandolph, Wendell Ramos, Megan Young, Isabelle De Leon, and Levi Ignacio.

The Venice International Film Festival is the world’s oldest film festival which aims “to raise awareness and promote international cinema in all its forms as art, entertainment and as an industry, in a spirit of freedom and dialogue,” according to its website.

Last year, Filipino director Lav Diaz bagged the top prize at the Venice Film Festival’s Orizzonti (Horizons) section for his cinematic masterpiece Lahi, Hayop (Genus, Pan).

Director Erik Matti directed a Philippine episode in the second season of HBO Asia’s Original horror anthology series, Folklore.
