Filipino photojournalist gets Japan magazine citation for Marawi images

Filipino photojournalist Fernando Sepe Jr. received citation as finalist in the Days Japan International Photojournalism Awards for images he took during the Marawi City siege in 2017.

Sepe, ABSCBN News’ deputy editor for multimedia, covered the crisis and came out with pictures described by the news network as images that “captured the anguish, fear, and resilience of Filipinos during the battle for the control of Marawi City.”

Days Japan, a monthly photojournalism magazine, awards world-class photographers who “do their work at great peril, many risking their lives for their shots.

Regardless of how the photos are taken, DAYS JAPAN aims to always tell the truth from the perspective of victimized civilians and not of those exercising authority through military or other power.”

Sepe’s set of photographs of the Marawi siege were cited along with other images taken by photojournalists from around the world for “advocating the dignity of humans and nature.”

ABSCBN came out in mid-March with Sepe’s and colleagues Jonathan Cellona and Patrick Quintos, a visual retelling of what Sepe describes as “the personal stories of people who experienced the battle of Marawi up close, a non-partisan, honest assessment of how Marawi is after the war and what the future holds for the once-proud Islamic city.”
