Filipino students from the Philippine Science High School (PSHS)-Bicol Region Campus and Saint Jude Catholic School (SJCS) have bagged three medals in the 17th International Geography Olympiad (iGEO 2021) held in Istanbul, Turkey.

Members of the Philippine geography team Ryan Abigan, Charles Anderson Tiu, and Victor Reyes won one silver and two bronze medals in this year’s edition of the iGEO held virtually due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic from August 10 to 16, 2021.

The Philippine representatives competed amongst 180 participants from 46 countries in the global tilt hosted by Turkey this year with the theme “Bridging the Continents.”

Ryan Abigan of Saint Jude Catholic School won the lone silver medal for the Philippines.

Bagging the bronze medals this year are Victor Reyes from PSHS-Bicol Region Campus and Charles Anderson Tiu, also from Saint Jude Catholic School.

The 2021 Philippine team to iGEO is composed of the following students: Tiu and Abigan of Saint Jude Catholic School, and Reyes and Ceejay Abilay of Philippine Science High School-Bicol Region Campus. They were joined by their coaches and team leaders Delia Casasis and Russel Odi.

The International Geography Olympiad (iGeo) is an annual competition for the best 16 to 19-year-old geography students from all over the world. Students that are chosen to represent their countries are the very best, chosen from thousands of students who participate enthusiastically in their own National Geography Olympiads.

Filipino students have shown dominance in recently concluded international competitions such as the International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO) in Russia and the International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) in Japan.
