Filipino Taekwondo athlete Allain Ganapin has secured a bronze medal in the Asian Qualification Tournament for the Tokyo Paralympic Games held in Amman, Jordan.

Ganapin competed in the men’s K44 -75kg division, defeating Jordanian Ahmed Makableh, 32-25, in the quarterfinals on May 23, 2021.

The Filipino national athlete fell to Batbayar Shinebayar of Mongolia in the semifinals, 41-10, missing out on his ticket to the Tokyo Paralympics and settling for third place in the competition.

The qualifying tournament grants its winner the sole ticket to the Tokyo Games in August.

Nine Filipinos have already qualified for the Summer Olympic Games scheduled in Tokyo this year, including the fellow taekwondo champion Kurt Barbosa, pole vaulter Ernest John Obiena, gymnast Carlos Yulo, Eumir Marcial, Irish Magno, Nesthy Petecio, and Carlo Paalam, weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz, and rower Cris Nievarez.

Filipino para-athlete Ernie Gawilan is the first Filipino qualifier to the 16th Summer Paralympics in Tokyo.
