Filipino welfare advocate Teresita “Terry” Villasenor’s artwork is being showcased in the LA City Hall Women’s History Month exhibit launched on International Women’s Day on March 8 as part of the government’s gender equity mission.
Villasenor’s “Purplex” – a story of courage, resilience and victory over domestic violence and human trafficking, depicted through acrylic on canvas – is presented in the art exhibit of pictures and paintings organized by the Los Angeles City Commission on the Status of Women.
The LA Exhibit illustrates the “strength of women who have experienced homelessness, domestic violence, and human trafficking through the theme Shifting Narratives: The Strength of Women Survivors.”
Villasenor, a member and advocate of the Pilipino Workers Center, is herself a victim of domestic violence and human trafficking when she first came to the United States. She works as a domestic helper while helping fellow workers in their difficulties.
