Gifted Filipino students dominate ASEAN science tilt

The Philippine team of gifted student scientists dominated the 5th ASEAN Plus Three Junior Science Odyssey (APTJSO) winning 15 medals and earning the top 2nd and 3rd ranks in the regional science competition held in June at the University of the Philippines Los Baňos (UPLB).

Philippine Science High School (PSHS) Cagayan Valley’s Team A composed of Jose Benjamin Dela Cruz, Hannah Keren Duque, and Mark Ely Namoro earned the silver medal at 2nd place.

PSHS Central Visayas campus’ Team D composed of Sean Dominic Abella, Joseph Karl Salva Jr., and Francis Jether Siao received the bronze medal at 3 rd spot.

The teams competed in laboratory assessment skills in biology, chemistry and physics, as well as poster presentation and project pitching.

The country’s delegation went against 25 other teams of 12-15- year-old students from the ASEAN region’s Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, as well as from China, Chinese Taipei, Korea, Sweden, and Japan.

"[T]he Philippines dominated the competition in terms of medal haul as it snatched 15 medals from the different component contests," the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Science Education Institute announced to media.

The nation’s young scientists have been dominating the APTJSO since it began in 2012, winning the championship for four straight years.

The APTJSO is an annual science competition among gifted students in the ASEAN region with the participation of Korea, China, and Sweden. The Department of Science and Technology-Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI) in cooperation with UP Los Baños organized the Philippines’ hosting of the regional science tilt for the first time, with the theme “Climate Change and the Rainforest.”
