Black-Filipino singer-songwriter Toro y Moi, also known as Chaz Bear, is paying tribute to his Pinoy roots in the upcoming studio album, Mahal.

The Grammy-nominated recording artist’s new album features the iconic Philippine jeepney on the cover with the Filipino word for love written on the front and San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge in the background.

The latest track from the album is “The Loop” which was released alongside a music video featuring the chillwave artist and his friends, including Filipino rapper Eyedress, having fun and cruising around San Francisco in the brightly colored ‘Mahal’ jeepney.

The video, released in February also shows Toro y Moi riding the viral “TNT Traysikel,” a Pinoy motorcycle-sidecar and public artwork that made headlines last year after roaming the streets of the San Francisco Bay Area.

The third song from the album, The Loop, is a funky and chill track that has Toro y Moi musing about the digital age and his friends.

The singer previously released two music videos for his songs “Postman” and “Magazine” from the new album.

In “Postman,” Toro y Moi also references Filipino culture and even rides a flying jeepney to the Philippines.

The music video stars the singer who helps deliver letters to Filipinos and their loved ones. The video also features Balikbayan boxes, Filipino snacks, and an animated version of a typical Filipino neighborhood.

Toro y Moi’s forthcoming album “MAHAL” will be released on April 29, 2022.

“Mahal” follows Toro y Moi’s album “Outer Peace” and his Grammy-nominated collaboration with Australian electronic musician Flume “The Difference.”

Filipino-American artists H.E.R. and Saweetie have paid homage to their heritage in various ways – through their collaboration “Closer” video which showed them flying to the Philippines, and individually when H.E.R. issued a shoutout to her Filipina aunt after winning the Grammys and Saweetie wearing Filipino couture during her Met gala appearance.
