The 2025 Philippine Eagle Week ended with a strong call to action from the Philippine Eagle Foundation (PEF) and its partners: to unite Filipinos in protecting the critically endangered national bird and the forests it calls home.

With the theme “Soaring Together: Empowering Communities, Educating Minds, and Protecting the Philippine Eagle,” the week-long celebration from June 4-10 gathered youth, indigenous peoples, and local leaders across Luzon and Mindanao for exhibits, talks, and performances.

In Davao City, the celebration opened at the Philippine Eagle Center in Malagos. Visitors, including students and families, joined guided tours, workshops, and film screenings about eagle conservation.

In Luzon, a milestone event was held at SM City Cabanatuan in Nueva Ecija—the first Philippine Eagle Week celebration in the region. This followed a historic eagle sighting in the Central Sierra Madre.

“The Philippine eagle soars as a gigantic guardian of our forests and a symbol of our national pride and heritage,” said Gerundio Fernandez, Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Officer of Nueva Ecija.

The Luzon leg featured a student art exhibit and an educational program to help the public understand the eagle’s role in protecting biodiversity.

“This is a historic moment for conservation in Luzon… The eagle’s presence is not just a discovery; it is a call to act,” said PEF Executive Director Dennis Salvador.

Back in Davao, the celebration continued at SM City Davao Annex, featuring a three-day gathering of Indigenous leaders, youth, and environmental advocates.

Dr. Franklyn Buenaflor of DENR XI shared, “The Philippine eagle cannot survive without our forests—and our forests cannot thrive without our united action.”

Cultural performances, like that of the Tinonanon Advocacy Band of the Manuvun Tinonanon Tribe of North Cotabato, highlighted the role of Indigenous communities. Groups such as the Obu Manuvu and Sumpaw Nang Magkatikadung Sang Maragusan also shared field experiences that have contributed to eagle discoveries.

The week-long campaign was made possible by partners including the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Biodiversity Management Bureau (BMB), Inlife Foundation, COMCO Mundo, and other supporters from the private and academic sectors.

As the celebration ends, the Philippine Eagle Foundation urges everyone to continue protecting the eagle and the forests that sustain life: “Let this not be a fleeting celebration, but a long-term commitment.”
