IKEA has announced it will source local organic food for its in-store restaurant in the Philippines. The initiative was revealed as the Swedish company prepares to open the world’s largest IKEA store in Manila by 2020.

IKEA Southeast Asia social media posted on June 2 the intent to source locally produced organic food ingredients. The furniture store also announced in media interviews their ongoing coordination with Filipino farmers.

IKEA Market Development manager Georg Platzer confirmed to media they are already in talks with farmers of Baguio and Southern Luzon about supplying the local food ingredients.

“When we open the world’s largest IKEA in Manila in 2020, we aim to serve locally produced, organic food in our restaurants. That means we can offer healthier choices for our customers while making a positive contribution to the livelihood of Filipino farmers,” IKEA Southeast Asia posted on Linked In.

The move is seen to be in line with IKEA initiatives to observe environmental standards as well as labor rights-friendly suppliers.

The 65,000 square meters blue box IKEA store is being built by SM Prime Holdings at the Mall of Asia in Pasay City. IKEA Southeast Asia will reportedly spend P7 billion for the store. It will initially employ 500 staff workers.
