Filipino social innovator Illac Diaz and Liter of Light led the country’s celebration of International Day of Light (IDL 2019) with solar lamp creation workshops at ABS-CBN Broadcasting Center.

Liter of Light, featured on the new Steven Spielberg Dreamworks film “Power of I,” taught solar lamp creation to media to mark the UNESCO-led International Day of Light on May 16.

The Philippine media event coordinated by internationally-awarded environmental mover Gina Lopez and G Diaries, produced 100 solar lamp bottles for donation to remote communities without electricity in the Philippines.

“Solving lack of access to lights is not one of a small group of available suppliers, but it is about working with thousands of hands and an open-source that can be repaired and scaled in the villages and in urban low-income areas,” Edison Awardee Illac Diaz shared in a Good News Pilipinas interview after being featured on Gina Lopez’ G Diaries series about empowering communities.

Gina Lopez encouraged the ABS-CBN stars, executives, and personnel to join the solar lights workshop and praised the Liter of Light social innovation. Lopez noted how the inexpensive sustainable lights are a tenth of the price of normal lights in the market with a lifespan of five years and able to light the place for up to ten hours.

“These lights will go a long way in spreading the love. Love is doing Bringing Light from the sun to their homes, to their living areas will go a long way in letting them feel the love. Let’s make this happen,” wrote Lopez in her encouragement to the media corporation’s community.

The recycled soda bottle solar lamps to light up G Diaries partner communities were created in day-long workshops with the network’s celebrities, executives, and personnel.

The following G Diaries partner communities have been identified by G Diaries to receive the Liter of Light solar lamps:

  • Zamboanga, fishing families in Sta Cruz
  • Lake Sebu, families, street lights
  • Polomolok, house lights for a hostel, street lights for projects
  • Tarlac, families, street lights
  • Tublay, street lights for two barangays with eco-tourism projects

Pinoy Big Brother (PBB) star Mark McMahon was the first Ambassador of Light at ABS-CBN. He was later joined by other PBB challengers in creating bottle lamps developed by Liter of Light and used to aid Yolanda victims.

Its Showtime stars were also seen taking a break to learn and create solar lamps for donation.

Good News Pilipinas Filipino Pride Advocate Illac Diaz and the Liter of Light recently wrapped up an epic 100-day Voyage of Light journey at sea around the world on the Peace Boat to light up off-grid communities. The global mission was endorsed by the United Nations.

Liter of Light continues to deliver solar lamps to Mindoro and other partner communities. The Filipino social innovation team will be featured at the Asian Power and Energy Summit on May 20-21 at the SMX Convention Center, and Transport Show on May 22-23.
