Jake Zyrus’ brave coming-out documentary receives an International Emmys nod.

A documentary based on the life of transgender Filipino singer Jake Zyrus, formerly known as Charice, has been nominated in this year’s International Emmy Awards.

The multi-awarded “Jake and Charice” was named a finalist in the category of Arts Programming and will compete against “Refavela 40“ (Brazil), “Why do we Dance?” (United Kingdom), and “Vertige de la Chute” (France).

Jake Zyrus shared on social media about the Emmys nomination announced on September 24, 2020.

“Surreal. Thank you @iemmys – It’s an honor,” Zyrus wrote in a social media post.

The Jake and Charice documentary details the singer’s transition from a female power belter singer for David Forster to a transgender man and the challenges he faced in the music industry.

‘Jake and Charice’ had previously won at the 2019 US International Film and Video Festival.

The documentary also received the Gold Camera Award under the social issues category for the Filipino singer’s brave account of his coming out journey.

‘Jake and Charice’ was produced by Japan-based NHK (Japan Broadcasting Corporation) in association with the Philippines’ broadcast network, ABS-CBN.

The annual Emmy Awards for American productions were recently held virtually with the participation of Filipino-American artists Jo Koy, H.E.R., and Augie Vargas. The 2020 Emmys also awarded Fil-Am producer Roxanne Paredes with the Creative Arts Emmy for Mr. Robot.

Winners of the International Emmy Awards will be released on November 23, 2020, at a ceremony in New York City.

Filipino films have been bagging the top honors at international festivals amid the pandemic.

Lav Diaz was hailed Best Director for his cinematic masterpiece “Lahi, Hayop (Genus, Pan)” in the prestigious Venice Film Festival.

Isabel Sandoval’s “Lingua Franca” nabbed the “Best Narrative Feature” award at this year’s Bentonville Film Festival.

SEND WELL WISHES in the comments below to the team behind the Jake and Charice documentary for getting a nomination at the International Emmy Awards.
