The Philippines’ “Babae at Baril” starring Janine Gutierrez will be the opening film for the 2020 New York Asian Film Festival (NYAFF) – a double milestone for the multi-awarded film since it is also its North American premiere.

“Babae at Baril” was an official entry to the 2019 QCinema International Film Festival where it won major awards for Best Actress for Janine Gutierrez and Best Director for Rae Red.

This year’s NYAFF is scheduled from August 28 to September 12, 2020, and goes digital due to the coronavirus threat.

The New York festival is also putting the spotlight on women filmmakers in their 2020 edition.

GMA Kapuso celebrity Janine Gutierrez went to social media on August 11 to express her excitement and announced the good news to her online followers.

“BABAE AT BARIL is going to New York,” the 30-year-old actress-TV host said.

“Babae at Baril, directed by QCinema International Film Festival Best Director @raeredcc, will be the opening film at the New York Asian Film Festival 2020,” she continued.

The European Studies major at the Ateneo de Manila University also congratulated the team behind the movie.

“So excited and soo fffffing wish we could actually go to NY for the North American premiere at the NYAFF but, nonetheless congrats to the team!

“Babae at Baril is available in the Philippines on Cignal Play streaming I hope you get to see it. So proud to be part of this female-led team.”

The psychological-thriller film, which also stars Elijah Canlas, Felix Roco, and JC Santos, tells the story of a department store saleslady who finds a gun and decides that she had enough of being an underdog.

Just this March, Babae at Baril was one of the four films that represented the Philippines at the 2020 Osaka Asian Film Festival in Japan.

Earlier this year, Janine Gutierrez was featured by The New York Post during the New York Fashion Week.
