Multi-awarded film ‘John Denver Trending’ is scheduled to screen for the first time in major cities in South Korea including at the CGV, Lotte Cinema, and Megabox theaters, making it the first Filipino movie to be shown widely in the country.
The Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) posted an alternative Korean poster of the movie that was featured in the New Currents competition section of the 24th Busan International Film Festival, with the announcement of its screening schedule on November 23, 2022.
The independent film directed and written by Arden Rod Condez is based on a true story about how a 14-year-old farm boy’s life changed when a video of him brutally attacking a classmate in retaliation for bullying goes viral on social media. “John Denver Trending” raises awareness against internet bullying and misinformation.
Child actor Jansen Magpusao plays John Denver Cabungcal in the Cinemalaya feature film that also stars Meryll Soriano and has won 15 major awards at film festivals around the world including Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Original Song, Editing, Cinematography, and NETPAC Jury Award at the 15th Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival.
In a Facebook post, director Condez expressed his gratitude about his film getting widely released in South Korea three years after it premiered in the Philippines. It was also featured South Korea’s leading broadcasting company, MBC.
“Super grateful for our South Korean distributor for being so eager and crazy for spending a lot for a three-year-old film.
“This is for everyone who helped us make this film happen. Three years and forever, I will always be grateful,” wrote Condez.
