Filipino journalist Maria Ressa made it to the Bloomberg 50 List of Most Influential Icons who define the year 2020.

Ressa, a press freedom advocate and CEO of a local news website Rappler, is the second Filipino honoree to be named in the prestigious annual list published on December 4, 2020. San Miguel Corporation CEO Ramon Ang made it to the same list last year.

“The Bloomberg 50” took a different approach in this year’s 4th edition as they highlight personalities from around the globe who are “changing the game in quantifiable ways” in the realm of politics, technology, business, fashion, and entertainment, to many others.

Bloomberg Business Week writer Matthew Campbell cited Ressa, one of 2020 TIME Magazine’s 100 Women of the Year and TIME Person of the Year in 2018, for her boldness in fighting for the free press in the Philippines.

“She’s carried on despite what journalism advocates say is a campaign of official intimidation, including a tax evasion case and a claim by regulators that financial support Rappler received violated a ban on foreign ownership of media. Free on bail, she’s fighting all those allegations—and still publishing,” wrote Campbell.

Ressa is joined by singer song-writer/ 4 Grammy winner Billie Eilish, U.S. chief justice of Supreme Court John Roberts, ‘Parasite’ director Bong Joon-Ho, NETFLIX Co-CEO Reed Hastings, Papa Giovanni Hospital’s Front-line Workers, and President and COO of SpaceX Gwynne Shotwell, among others on the Bloomberg 50.

Maria Ressa is also a recipient of various international journalism awards over the past years including her 2019 Shorenstein Journalism Award given by Stanford University in California, the Columbia Journalism School Award in New York, the Gwen Ifill Press Freedom Award in New York, and the Golden Pen of Freedom award in Portugal, both in 2018.

SEND CONGRATULATIONS in the comments below to Maria Ressa for making it to the 4th annual list of the Bloomberg 50 List of Most Influential Icons.
