JUST IN: Cinemalaya reveals Independent Short Films winners

16th Cinemalaya Short Films winners
Cinemalaya is a film festival in the Philippines held annually during the month August. Credits to Cultural Center of the Philippines.

The 16th Cinemalaya Film Festival has revealed this year’s winners for the Short Film Category.

The country’s biggest indie film event which opted to go all-digital this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic announced on August 12, 2020, the winners under six categories.

LOut of the 10 short film finalists, the 20-minute romantic-fantasy film “Tokwifi” dominated the competition after receiving two awards including this year’s Best Film and NETPAC Jury Prize.

Following are the Cinemalaya winners along with the prizes:

Best Feature Film – “Tokwifi” by Carla Pulido Ocampo
Prize: “Balanghay” trophy, Php 150,000, a set of Osmo Free access pocket handled camera, full-colored grading services from optimo-digital worth Php 360,000

Best Direction – “Living Things” by Martika Ramirez Escobar
Prize: “Balanghay” trophy

NETPAC Jury Prize – “Tokwifi” by Carla Pulido Ocampo
Prize: Certificate from Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP)

Special Jury Prize – “Ang Pagpakalma Sa Unos” by Joanna Vasquez Arong
Prize: “Balanghay” trophy, a total of Php 85,000 cash prize

Best Screenplay – “Pabasa Kan Pasyon” by Hubert Tibi
Prize: “Balanghay” trophy

Audience Choice Award– “Quing Lalam Ning Aldo” by Reeden Fajardo
Prize: Php 50,000 with Certificate from CCP

The Best Film awardee “Tokwifi” was voted unanimously for its highly original take on love between two persons coming from different eras and worlds.

The virtual awarding ceremony was hosted by Kapuso actress Glaiza de Castro and acclaimed Filipino directors Sari Dalena and Raymond Red, along with American film festival founder Jeannette Hereniko sat as jurists.

The 16th Cinemalaya short films are still streamed online until August 16, 2020. on the Vimeo channel.

Amid the lockdown, Cinemalaya pushed through with this year’s event via its 1st online competition.
