This just in: Filipino Canadian teen tennis star Leylah Annie Fernandez delivered another upset win, this time over world champion Angelique Kerber to advance to the quarterfinals at the U.S. Open.

The 18-year-old Canadian tennis player of Filipino descent defeated three-time Grand Slam champion Angelique Kerber of Germany in the Round of 16 of the US Open, 4-6, 7-6 (5), 6-2, on Sunday in New York (Monday, September 6, Philippine Standard Time).

On Friday, Fernandez delivered a shocking upset to No. 3 seed and defending U.S. Open champion Naomi Osaka, 5-7, 7-6(2), 6-4, to advance past the third round of the American Grand Slam for the first time.

“I just tried to use all my trainings from back home,” Fernandez said. “They told me take it point by point…I was glad I was able to execute it,” Fernandez said in a post-match interview.

The teenage tennis sensation will face 5th seed Ukrainian Elina Svitolina in the quarterfinals.

“That’s going to be a very tough match,” Fernandez said. “She’s a great player, she’s a fighter, she returns a lot of balls. She’s offensive, aggressive so you know what, I’m just going to go on court and have fun like I’ve been doing the past few days…we’ll see how it goes.”

At 16 years old, Fernandez became the first tennis player from Canada to bag the French Open n 2021, the first Grand Slam Juniors title for the country since Felix Auger-Aliassime won his in the 2016 US Open.

She is also the first Canadian female to win a title since Eugenie Bouchard won her title at the 2012 Wimbledon.

The Filipino Canadian netter earlier this year won her first professional title at the Monterrey Open.

Born in Montreal, Quebec to an Ecuadorian father and a Filipino mother from Toronto, Fernandez is currently the world No. 73 on WTA.
