Asia Pacific Social Innovation Liter of Light
These celebrity solar engineers have accepted the Light it Forward Challenge to hand-build solar lamps for communities without electricity.

JUST IN: The Liter of Light has just won the Asia Pacific Social Innovation and Partnership Award (APSIPA) for its “Light it Forward” campaign that challenges people to hand-build solar lamps for donation to electricity-deprived communities while paying tribute to frontliners of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Filipino social enterprise is the only Philippine-based organization to receive the prestigious recognition from the Ministry of Economic Affairs in Taiwan.

The Light it Forward campaign won the APSIPA in the Social Prosperity category, besting 95 applications from 16 countries in the region.

Liter of Light was awarded for its case study on its current “Light it Forward” campaign, which unites artists, the media, businesses, and service groups to change the world even while confined in their homes amid the pandemic.

Illac Diaz, Liter of Light’s Founder, and Ami Valdemoro, Director of the Board of Trustees, presented the case to a distinguished panel of judges from around the region.

By giving just 20 minutes of their time, “LIGHT IT FORWARD” is giving Filipinos a new way to connect for good. Inspired by the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, LIGHT IT FORWARD invites ordinary people to do extraordinary things through building solar lights for communities without electricity, even in the midst of this global health crisis.

PHOTO Liter of Light teaches these community solar engineers how to hand-build and maintain their solar lights.

As of today, LIGHT IT FORWARD has counted on the support of over 120 celebrities, influencers, and artists, with an estimated total fan base of 30 million supporters.

“At a time when many social impact organizations have had to cease operations, we are humbled by this news,” says Diaz, an Edison Award recipient.

“Receiving the Asia Pacific Social Innovation and Partnership Award is a testimony to our Liter of Light team’s hard work and dedication to continue to be of service to our communities even in the midst of this pandemic.”

Liter of Light’s Light it Forward is among the ten projects from six countries that will be awarded during the Asia Pacific Social Innovation Summit, which will be held virtually from September 21-25, 2020. The summit will focus on how social innovations can alleviate recent global challenges.

The Light it Forward campaign is led by the Liter of Light Foundation in partnership with GoodNewsPilipinas.com and the Rotary Club of Makati Business District.

The Light it Forward Challenge videos of celebrity solar engineers who have joined the solar advocacy of championing the noble cause of the solar lighting movement can be seen here: batch 1, batch 2, batch 3, and batch 4.
