Grammy-award winning Filipino-American musician Apl.de.Ap of Black Eyed Peas is again giving back to the Philippines by donating a retinal imaging camera to the Pampanga provincial hospital for a more adequate diagnosis of the cause of infant blindness.
The Pampanga-born and raised Apl.de.Ap a.k.a Allan Pineda Lindo is donating the Retinal Camera (RetCam) on February 19 to the Jose B. Lingad Memorial Regional Hospital in San Fernando, Pampanga.
This is not the first time Apl.de.Ap is helping the country and the world’s medical community and in fact, through his Apl.de.ap Foundation, the world-renowned Fil-Am is known to champion many causes for Filipino children including their education – earning him a spot in the GNP Top Inspirational Stories of 2018.
In 2016, Apl.de.ap teamed up with the renowned Vision Center of the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles to donate a RetCam to a Davao hospital as part of his Campaign for Filipino Children.
The campaign seeks to provide assistance to the Philippine medical community, specifically the regional and provincial hospitals, in terms of diagnosis of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) – a pre-term infant condition that can cause lifelong blindness to premature newborn babies if not attended to within 48 hours of birth.
Apl.de.Ap himself was diagnosed with visual impairment when he was young and eventually received treatment in America. The celebrity performer has been diagnosed as legally blind but continues to be active on stage.
Apl.de.Ap will be in the country to personally handover the RetCam to the Pampanga hospital.
“I’m really proud to donate this in my hometown of Pampanga,” Apl.de.ap said. “As a kid who grew up with visual impairment, I know firsthand what it is to navigate this region without being able to see. I’m glad I can make a small impact to changing this, but there’s still a long way to go.”
