Understanding National Women’s Day:

Originating from the global recognition of International Women’s Day on March 8, National Women’s Month in the Philippines has deep historical roots. The day commemorates the early 20th-century efforts by working women in the U.S. who stood against inadequate wages and working conditions, highlighted by the tragic 1911 Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire.

Internationally, figures like Clara Zetkin were pivotal in establishing March 8 as a day to honor women’s labor contributions, influencing significant historical events and gaining recognition from the United Nations.

In the Philippines, this month-long celebration acknowledges women’s achievements while also focusing on advancing gender equality and empowerment, aligning with global and national frameworks like the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women and the Sustainable Development Goals.
