The new song “Bagani”, the official theme of the Philippine Quincentennial celebrations in 2021, depicts Filipino heroism and bravery.
‘Bagani’, composed by Roel Rostata and performed by Anthony Castillo with his award-winning a capella group PINOPELA, was chosen as the celebration’s official theme song as it was developed during the Philpop Bootcamps 2019 under the supervision of National Artist for Music Ryan Cayabyab.
The song was officially launched by the National Quincentennial Committee, the National Historical Commission of the Philippines, and the National Commission for Culture and the Arts, on December 14 during the kick-off to the 2021 celebrations.
The simultaneous ceremonies marked the start of the 500-day countdown towards the nationwide Quincentennial celebrations to mark the 500th Anniversary of the Victory at Mactan, the First Circumnavigation of the World, and other related events such as the arrival of the Christian Faith and the first Baptism.
The term ‘Bagani’ is an indigenous word that refers to the “peace-keeping force” of tribal warriors who defend their community, protect the people’s lives as well as their properties.
In the lyrics of the newly released song, the Filipinos are branded as “Bagani”, not to engage in wars but to inspire them to be always of service to the community and country, even in small ways.
