London’s first Filipino ice cream parlor, Mamasons Dirty Ice Cream, won the Best Sweet Treat Award from The Golden Chopsticks Awards (GCA) in London.

The iconic Pinoy dirty ice cream being enjoyed by Londoners in Camden Town bested 3 other finalists in the GCAs that celebrate the enormous contribution of Oriental cuisine to the UK catering industry.

Filipino owners Omar Shah and Mae Maglanoc received the award saying, “We had a goal, and that goal was to spread the love and flavours the islands of the Philippines have to offer.”

The small batch producer specializing in flavors indigenous to the Philippines and its surrounding islands has developed unique flavors such as ube (the new matcha), pandan (the Asian vanilla), calamansi (Filipino yuzu) to name just a few of the exotic offerings since it was established in 2017.

“With every bite you’ll get an explosion of hot, cold, sweet and creamy blended flavours.” The Mamasons bun – a Filipino baked pandesal (a traditional milk bun) filled with cool ice cream then sealed and toasted instantly became a summer hit. Credits to Mamasons.

“We’re getting the Filipino brand out there, just push some more” said Chef Omar in a post award video of the group celebrating their win.

Mamasons describes their inspiration for the shop: “‘Dirty ice-cream” is the nickname used to describe the ice-cream sold on the streets of Manila. It is best known for being affordable, delicious, and produced using little more than ice, salt, a steel pot, and a sturdy pair of hands.”

“We don’t want to simply serve ice-cream, we want to create a cultural experience. Filipino cuisine is synonymous with a tradition of creating and serving food with great love. Like Nanay (mother) in her kitchen and the dirty ice-cream vendor on the street, Mamasons is here to carry on that tradition,” explains Mamasons of their mission to seek to capture the simple goodness of their namesake Filipino snack.
