Eleven-year-old Filipino cellist Damodar das Castillo has won the top prize from the International Competition for Young Musicians in Estonia.
Castillo emerged on top of his category B (age 11-13) in the competition held on April 9 in Tallin.
The Filipino cello prodigy, who also played as the youngest member and soloist for the award-winning Manila Symphony Junior Orchestra last year in Vienna, shined among 15 other contestants from different parts of Europe in the preliminary round to secure a spot in the finals.
In the final round, Damodar das Castillo played Haydn’s “Cello Concerto in C” together with the chamber orchestra, and he eventually bagged the first prize.
The young Filipino cellist also received two diplomas – for eminent style and for best performance of a virtuoso piece.
Damodar das Castillo is currently under the tutelage of Prof. Barbara Leubke at Mozarteum University in Salzburg, Austria.
