MEET Nikki Luna, the Philippine representative to the Cairo Biennale 2019, her 4th year to represent the country in a fine arts festival.

Luna is the artist who founded StartART, and the activist who established the publication of POWER IN HER STORY.

Nikki Luna represented the Philippines at the Singapore Biennale 2014, Aichi Japan Triennial 2013, Beijing Biennale 2012. She now again represents the Philippines in joining the Cairo Biennale, a fine arts exhibit of a wide range of different mediums of art. Her participation in the upcoming Cairo Biennale 2019.

Nikki studied visual art at the University of the Philippines and is currently taking her Masters in Women and Development Studies at the same university. Because of her love for arts she studied again at Cooper Union School of Art New York and refined her artist skills. Luna acquired a Chevening Award, Master in Art and Education, and studied at Goldsmiths College, London.

Luna founded StartART and POWER IN HER STORY to aid women and children. StartART intends to inspire and motivate women through art programs. StartART also addresses the needs of youth victims of human rights violations in conflict areas.

In 2018 POWER IN HER STORY published the book titled “I Love my Body” to raise body awareness among women and to encourage them to love and acknowledge their own body. The POWER IN HER STORY is encouraging women through sharing arts and publishing books that focus on the rights of women. The organization also envisions to educate and inform the people on the significance of establishing a non-sexist environment, ensuring gender equality, and upholding the human rights of women and girls.

Nikki Luna initiates and uses her art to help youth and women in society. “I use my art to help girls who are sexually abused,” Luna said during her interview with Rappler.
