Filipino artisans and weaving communities now have the chance to take the national spotlight as the 2025 Piña and Abaca Weaving Competitions officially open their call for entries.
HABI: The Philippine Textile Council is once again inviting skilled weavers from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao to submit entries to the 8th Lourdes Montinola Piña Weaving Competition and 4th Eloisa Hizon Gomez Abaca Weaving Competition. The winners will be featured at the 15th Likhang HABI Market Fair happening from October 10–12, 2025, at SPACE in One Ayala, Makati City.
“We want to give voice and value to the hands behind every woven creation,” said HABI founder Maribel Ongpin. “The artistry of Filipino weavers deserves a national stage.”
What the Competitions Celebrate
This year’s competitions continue to honor two iconic Philippine fibers: the delicate piña from pineapple leaves and the strong, globally respected abaca known as Manila hemp. Each material holds centuries of tradition and pride in Filipino identity, passed down through generations.
In a world of fast fashion, these contests stand as a testament to sustainable practices and cultural pride, supporting the preservation of local weaving skills.
Competition Guidelines
For the Piña Weaving Competition, weavers can choose from three categories:
- Liniwan (plain, no design),
- Pure Piña, and
- Natural Fiber Blends with Piña (such as Seda, Jusi, Cotton, or Abaca).
Each entry must be at least 2 meters long, with no width limitation. Bonus points will be given to fabrics that use natural dyes. Submissions must also include a list of materials and a written explanation of how the piece was created.
The Abaca Weaving Competition includes:
- Ikat (a dyeing technique for pattern-making),
- Abaca Craft (non-woven abaca items), and
- Nipis (fine woven pure abaca).
Entries must be 2 to 6 meters long, also with no limit on width. Use of natural dyes also earns extra points.
