Philippine high school students have won the historic first gold for the country in the 2021 World Schools Debate Championships (WSDC) virtually held in Macau.

The members of the Philippine debate team finished strong, winning the Overall Best Speaker title for the first time in history and picking up the bronze medal after reaching the semifinals of the online tournament held from July 26 to August 6, 2021.

Robert Nelson Leung, a Grade 12 student from the Philippine Science High School – Cordillera Administrative Region Campus (PSHS-CARC), won the first-ever “gold medal” for the Philippines after being named Overall Best Speaker with an average of 73.17 speaker points.

Leung bested 372 other students for the coveted title in the global tilt, which recorded the participation of 76 countries this year.

Three other members of the national debate team bagged best speaker awards in the online edition of the WSDC.

David Bloom of the International School of Manila (ISM) was awarded 4th Best Speaker, while Jake Peralta of Southridge High School (SR) was awarded 6th Best Speaker. Riva Fong of De La Salle Zobel (DLSZ) was awarded 11th Best Speaker.

The World Schools Debate Championships is the most prestigious international English-language debating competition for high school level students. It is widely considered to be the “Olympics of high school debate” by debate societies all over the world.

Founded in 1988, the tournament provides an opportunity to showcase the highest standard of secondary school debating as well as promoting debating in schools in the host nation.

Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) students won top honors after reaching the Grand Finals of the 2021 Korea World Universities Debating Championships (WUDC) and were hailed as Asia’s best debaters at the United Asians Debating Championship (UADC) held in Vietnam.
