The Philippines’ Christine Juliane “CJ” Opiaza made history as the first Filipina to be crowned Miss Grand International (MGI), elevated from her previous position as first runner-up.

Celebrate more Filipina beauty and grace on the world stage in this story of CJ Opiaza’s 2024 Miss Grand International runner-up finish.

The 26-year-old model, pasarela coach, and beauty queen from Zambales was officially crowned Miss Grand International 2024 in an emotional ceremony held on June 3, 2025, in Bangkok, Thailand. No less than MGI founder and president Nawat Itsaragrisil placed the crown on her head and raised her hand in victory.

This development followed the resignation and relinquishment of the title by the previous winner, Rachel Gupta of India.

Opiaza dazzled in a peacock-inspired green and gold gown designed by renowned Filipino couturier Mak Tumang, who, along with his team, crafted the masterpiece in just three days.

Relive the iconic moment when Mak Tumang’s fiery red creation lit up the Miss Universe stage for Catriona Gray’s 2018 win.

In her speech during the ceremony, the newly crowned beauty queen expressed her readiness to embrace both the responsibilities and challenges of being a titleholder.

“I know the best things happen for a reason. You just have to wait for that very specific moment—but you have to hold on and do whatever it takes,” said the Zambaleña beauty.

“Before I signed up for this job, I knew I was born ready. I am always ready—and now I’ve been given the challenge. I am taking on the challenge and the responsibility to fill those shoes—as your first runner-up, and now, as your Miss Grand International 2024,” she added.

Additionally, in a rare moment in pageant history, the Philippine national anthem was played inside the MGI Hall following her crowning.

Aside from being the first Filipina to hold the Miss Grand International crown, Opiaza also completed the country’s collection of titles from the “Big 6” international pageants.

The Philippines now holds four Miss Universe crowns, one Miss World title, six Miss International titles, four Miss Earth crowns, one Miss Supranational title, and now, its first Miss Grand International crown.
