The Philippines’ golf champion, Yuka Saso, has officially booked her Tokyo Olympics berth after completing the KPMG Women’s Professional Gold Association (PGA) Tournament in the United States.

Saso, the winner of the 2021 US Women’s Open, competed for the first time as a Major Champion and an LPGA Tour member in the tournament held at the Highlands Course of the Atlanta Athletic Club in Johns Creek, Georgia, from June 24 to 27.

Although the Filipina golfer did not win the KPMG tour, her tied-for-21st place finish was enough to keep her in the top 60 of the Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings released June 28, guaranteeing her Olympics berth.

Her performance was also enough to push her rank to No. 8, a notch higher than her World No. 9 ranking after her historic win at the US Women’s Open. Yuka Saso has in fact stayed in the Top 10 of the rankings in four consecutive weeks.

The Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) today confirmed the inclusion of Yuka Saso in the official delegation to the quadrennial games in Japan.

Saso’s fellow gold medalist at the SEA Games and Asian Games, Bianca Pagdanganan, has also been listed by the POC in the 17-member contingent vying for the country’s first Olympic gold when both golfers play at the
Tokyo Olympics golf event from August 4 to 7.

Yuka Saso and Bianca Pagdanganan join 15 other Filipino athletes who have qualified for the Tokyo Olympics including pole vaulter EJ Obiena, gymnast Carlos Yulo, boxers Nesthy Petecio, Carlo Paalam, Irish Magno and Eumir Felix Marcial, skateboarder Margielyn Didal, taekwondo jin Kurt Barbosa, rower Cris Nievarez, weightlifters Hidilyn Diaz and Elreen Ando, shooter Jayson Valdez, Judo champion Kiyomi Watanabe, golfer Juvic Pagunsan, and sprinter Kristina Knott.
