Filipina Olympic gold medalist Hidilyn Diaz has been elected to serve on the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) Athletes’ Commission after securing her first world title in Bogota, Colombia.

Diaz was chosen as a member of the athletes’ commission during the elections held alongside the 2022 IWF World Championships.

The 31-year-old two-time Olympian bagged three gold medals in the women’s 55kg category of the tournament, marking a milestone for Diaz who added a world title to her string of achievements.

Diaz is among the 10 newly-elected members of the commission:

  1. Hidilyn Diaz of the Philippines
  2. Maude Charron of Canada
  3. Fares Ibrahim Elbakh of Qatar
  4. David Liti of New Zealand
  5. Forrester Osei of Ghana
  6. Luisa Peters of Cook Islands
  7. Marie Hanitra Roilya Ranaivosoa of Mauritius
  8. Yasmin Zammit Stevens of Malta
  9. Cyrille Tchatchet II of Great Britain
  10. Keydomar Giovanni Vallenilla Sánchez of Venezuela

The election took place between December 5 and 16 and was the first time it was held for the IWF Athletes’ Commission, according to a press release on the IWF website.

The members will serve on the commission until the 2024 Electoral Congress held after the Olympic Games in 2024.

Hidilyn Diaz made history when she delivered the Philippines’ first-ever gold in the Olympics after 97 years.
