Philippines’ martial arts team reaps 19 golds, 2nd overall rank at Kenya Mombasa Open

Team Philippines has reaped 19 gold, 19 silver, and 7 bronze medals to finish 2nd overall in the recently concluded Mombasa Open Tong-Il Moo-Do (TIMD) International Martial Arts Championship in Mombasa, Kenya.

Ten gold-winning athletes of the 17-member Philippine delegation propelled the team to a close 2nd place finish behind host Kenya in the tournament among 16 nations.

The national Tong Il Moo Do Team competed amongst athletes from around the world in the international tilt held at the Aga Khan Academy in Kenya from December 11 to 22, 2021.

Heading the country’s medal haul is Filipina player Jinnefer Berfulfo who dominated all six categories that she competed in, including the Gichoom, Individual Sparring Finweight, Individual Bon, Team Bon Women, Team Mixed Bon, and the Team Special Technique.

Another Filipina athlete Princess Minmi Ilustrisimo also brought home the gold in the Individual Special Techniques, while securing bronze medals in the women’s Sparring Flyweight and the Individual Bong.

Here are the following Filipino athletes who also bagged medals in the 9th Mombasa Open Tong-Il Moo-Do (TIMD) International Martial Arts Championship:

  • Mharjude Delos Santos (2 golds, 3 silvers)
  • Cyrus Tumanda (3 golds, 3 silvers)
  • Reymark Bais (3 golds, 2 silvers, 1 bronze)
  • Jocelyn Pablo (2 golds, 2 silvers)
  • Aldrige Urianza (1 gold, 2 silvers, 1 bronze)
  • Vincent Laguerta (1 gold, 4 silvers, 1 bronze)
  • Jayson Purificacion (2 golds, 3 silvers)
  • Rhenel Desuyo (2 golds, 1 silver, 1 bronze)
  • Rhenel Desuyo (1 gold, 1 silver, 1 bronze)
  • Marissa Arbolario (1 gold)

The Philippines’ Team Bagsik also recently bagged six medals and other awards in the IFMA World Muaythai Championships in Thailand while Filipino youth para-athletes secured the country’s best-ever medal finish in this year’s Asian Youth Para Games (AYPG) in Bahrain.
