Philippines’ Sofia Frank bags gold in Asian Figure Skating tilt

The Philippines’ Sofia Frank won the gold medal at the 2022 Asian Open Figure Skating Trophy held in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Frank topped the senior women’s category after registering a total score of 143.97 in the short program and free skating segments.

The Filipino-American figure skater accumulated 50.19 points in the short program and 93.78 points in the free skating category of the annual competition.

Frank thanked the Philippine Skating Union, adding that competing in the tournament was an “amazing experience.”

“Such an amazing experience, I loved meeting everyone. Thank you,” Sofia Frank wrote in an Instagram post on December 10, 2022.

Frank competed among 100 skaters from 12 countries in the competition held at Oasis Centre Arena GC from December 7 to 9, 2022.

Fellow Filipino figure skater, Skye Chua, finished in seventh place out of eight competitors in the competition.

Frank earlier become the country’s first female qualifier to the 2022 World Junior Figure Skating Championships after winning medals in the annual Colorado Springs Invitational and breaking several Philippine records in an international competition.

Filipino athletes who recently brought honor to the country include Albay’s chess prodigy Bince Rafael Operiano who brought home a trophy, gold, silver, and two bronze medals from the 6th East Asia Youth Chess Championship, and gymnast siblings Elaiza and Karl Yulo who won a total of 10 medals at the JRC Gymnastics Stars Championships in Thailand.
