The Philippines’ top broadcast journalists are training selected Teacher-Broadcasters for the Department of Education (DepEd) TV productions that serve as the “new normal” learning tool for students without an internet connection.

The DepEd’s line-up of trainers consists of star-studded media personalities from the country’s biggest TV networks such as GMA 7, ABS-CBN, and TV 5, announced DepEd Undersecretary Alain Pascua on September 18, 2020.

TV 5’s Luchi Cruz-Valdes serves as the Senior Trainer and Advisor of the newly launched initiative of the department to cope with the distance learning that will be the mode of the current school year 2020-2021, while anchor-host Paolo Bediones is the lead trainer.

The 107 identified teacher-broadcasters will be trained by the country’s respected news personalities such as Jessica Soho, Atom Araullo, Karen Davila, and Korina Sanchez, among others.

“We are very fortunate to have the decades of combined broadcast and hosting experience of multi-awarded broadcast journalists, television and radio personalities to guide our Teacher-Broadcasters for DepEd TV,” said USec Pascua.

Kapuso host Jessica Soho said to the teachers, “Sa totoo lang po, wala tayong masyadong pinagkaiba. Journalists have three basic functions or tasks: to inform, to enlighten, and like you, dear teachers, to educate. We also have the same method of teaching: by telling stories. Welcome to your New Normal, dear teachers.”

The extensive training sessions of the teachers that involved effective TV presenting and understanding the elements of video production was started at the University of the Philippines – Diliman and Los Banos.

The department has also established 16 areas that are already preparing for the broadcast-ready studios in locations such as Ilocos Norte, Lanao del Norte, Pangasinan, Zamboanga, Palawan, and Davao.

A total of 130 educational episodes per week, dubbed in local languages, are expected to air from the start of classes on October 5, 2020, onwards that cover the major school subject areas.
