The Philippines’ champion golfer Yuka Saso now leads the Mercedes-Benz Player of the Year (POY) race after her strong performance at the Toto Japan Classic tourney.

The 1st Filipina golfer to win the Japan LPGA tour last August regained the top spot in the Mercedes-Benz POY ranking for prize winnings after finishing in second place at the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) series held from November 6-8, 2020, in Omitami City that was won by Jiyai Shin of Korea.

The 19-year-old Saso’s career-best nine-under par 63 on the last day of the tourney gave her the 1st place spot in the Mercedes-Benz POY with 37.39 points and 23.89 million in winnings, unseating Sakura Koiwai. Saso finished the 54-hole tournament on 16-under 200.

The number one player at the end of the JLPGA season is given a 3-year exemption on the JLPGA tour along with the title of LPGA Mercedes-Benz Player of the Year.

The JLPGA tour report referred to Yuka Saso as “a marvelous rookie” after her near-win at the TOTO Japan Classic Taiheiyo Club Minori Course (Ibaraki Prefecture) which gave her the prize money of ¥ 14,637,920.

Yuka Saso is an Asian Games Women’s Golf gold medalist for the Philippines who has since turned professional.
