The Philippines’ Muaythai champion Phillip “El Kapitan” Delarmino has made history by becoming the first Filipino athlete to be nominated for the World Games Athlete of the Year honor awarded by the International World Games Association (IWGA).

Delarmino joins 23 candidates shortlisted for the prestigious award after bringing home gold medals in the World Muaythai Championships held last December in Thailand.

The 31-year-old Muaythai fighter is currently vying for votes in the contest’s online polls, where only the top ten with the most votes will advance to the next round.

The winners will receive trophies and prizes from the official sponsor of The World Games Athlete of the Year, Protective Life.

Here’s how you can vote for the Philippines’ Phillip Delarmino to help him win the 2021 World Games Athlete of the Year honor:

Go to the World Games website and vote for Phillip Delarmino in the Muaythai category.

Votes for the candidates can be cast on the IWGA website once every 24 hours. Participants must give votes to two candidates of their choice.

The first candidate chosen will receive two votes while the second candidate will only get one vote.

The first round of voting closes on January 23, 2022, and will determine the ten finalists advancing to the next round of the competition.

Aside from being the International Federation of Muaythai Associations (IFMA) world champion last year, Phillip Delarmino also delivered a gold medal for Philippine Muaythai during the 2019 Southeast Asian Games held in Subic Bay in the Philippines.

The World Muay Thai Council (WMC) Asian featherweight champion also bagged several medals during various international tournaments.

Team Philippines recently reaped 19 gold, 19 silver, and 7 bronze medals to finish 2nd overall in the recently concluded Mombasa Open Tong-Il Moo-Do (TIMD) International Martial Arts Championship in Mombasa, Kenya.
