Pinoy rowers Paraon, Nievarez lead PH 8 medal haul in Asian Virtual Indoor Championships

Pinoy champion rowers Cris Nievarez and Kristine Paraon led the 8-medals haul of Team Philippines at the Asian Rowing Virtual Indoor Championships – kicking off a bountiful start to the 2022 season.

The national team from the Philippine Rowing Association nabbed 6 silver and 2 bronze medals in the virtual sports event organized by the Hong Kong, China Rowing Association.

The Filipino paddlers and the university-based Ateneo Rowing Team took on their first race of the year with medal-winning performances in the virtual competition live streamed on January 15, 2022.

Filipino Olympian Cris Nievarez, who made it to the quarterfinals of the men’s single sculls in the Tokyo Summer Games, won a silver for the crew in the under 23 men’s 2000-meter event with a time of 6 minutes and 25.90 seconds.

Filipina rower Kristine Paraon bagged the best finish in the national team with two silver medals in the under 23 women’s 2000-meter and 500-meter events.

  • Silver – Joachim de Jesus (Under 23 Lightweight Men 500m)
  • Silver – Zuriel Sumintac (Lightweight Men 500m)
  • Silver – Alyssa Go (Under 23 Lightweight Women 500m)
  • Bronze – Christian Joseph Jasmin (Under 23 Lightweight Men 2000m)
  • Bronze – Kharl Julianne Sha (Under 23 Lightweight Women 500m)

Members of the Philippine national rowing team previously rowed towards 1 gold, 2 silvers, and 1 bronze medal finish at the 2019 Asian Rowing Coastal Championships held in Thailand.
