Filipino athlete Rodolfo Llena Reyes Jr. has won the gold at the 2020 Lents Taekwondo Worldwide Online Poomsae Open held virtually amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
The 2019 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games medalist edged other Asian players in the Under-30 senior male category to secure the gold for the Philippines in the Lents tourney finals held September 22, 2020.
Reyes, a former University of Santo Tomas (UST) Poomsae captain, proudly wore his school brand while displaying two forms during the final round and received an average of 7.35 points from his Pyongwon (7.34 points) and Koryo (7.36 points).
Reyes bested Choo Rok Oh won of Korea who bagged silver with 7.235 points and Taiwan’s Chiou Mu En who settled for the bronze with 7.185 points.
Reyes shared in an interview with The Varsitarian that he is still adjusting to the online tournaments after competitions were forced to switch online because of the COVID-19 threat.
“I’m used to seeing judges in front of me to guide and rate my performance, but in the new normal cameras serve as our judges,” the Filipino gold medalist said.
In August 2019, Reyes was one of the Pinoy jins who brought home a total of 13 medals from the 2019 Asian Taekwondo Open Championships held in Vietnam.
Also in August last year, the Philippine National Taekwondo Team conquered the 2019 Shinhan World Peace Taekwondo Festival in South Korea and won a total of 56 golds, 20 silvers, and 11 bronze medals.
